Plastic is everywhere - in packaging, in supply chains, in oceans. But in Malaysia, a growing coalition of industry leaders is working to turn the tide. On July 2nd, WWF-Malaysia and the Business Council for Sustainable Development (BCSD) Malaysia launched a new effort to transform how businesses think about plastic: not as waste, but as a resource in a circular economy.

Leading the charge is the Plastic Circulatory Toolkit, a new digital self-assessment platform developed by WWF-Malaysia to help businesses evaluate, benchmark, and improve their plastic waste practices.  From mapping material flows to identifying opportunities for redesign and recovery, the toolkit empowers companies to embed circular practices within their operations and supply chains.

To ensure real impact, BCSD Malaysia will lead a nationwide rollout of the Toolkit through a Plastic Circularity Clinic Series, running through December 2025.

These clinics will provide solution-driven knowledge-sharing sessions and targeted workshops for industries with high plastic footprints, especially hospitality, retail, and FMCG.

This initiative is a direct response to the Malaysia Plastic Sustainability Roadmap 2021–2030, which outlines two critical goals:

  • Achieve a 25% recycling rate for plastic packaging by 2025

  • Phase out single-use plastics by 2030

The toolkit and clinic series aim to translate these goals into practical actions on the ground, giving businesses the tools and support they need to lead the shift from a linear to a circular plastic economy.

"The Plastic Circularity Toolkit is designed to help businesses assess and improve their practices, moving from compliance to conviction and from awareness to action. We value BCSD’s role in enabling peer learning through clinics and engagements, which will be instrumental in supporting businesses on this journey."

--  Sophia Lim, CEO of WWF-Malaysia

The initiative was launched at Aloft Kuala Lumpur Sentral, BCSD Malaysia’s strategic sustainability partner and the pilot venue for the Toolkit. The event featured a panel discussion on circular solutions in FMCG, hospitality and retail, followed by a closed-door clinic co-led with MAREA.

Companies including AEON, UCSI and Alam Flora joined the session to begin translating strategy into action.
